World Diabetes Day: Dietary Recommendations to Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk

World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world and is held on November 14 each year. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world. World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community.

India, already the diabetic capital of the world, is heading towards a diabetic explosion, with 70 million people to be affected by 2015, a decade ahead of expectations. Fuelling the alarming trend is the rise in diabetes prevalence in rural areas. MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child has taken initiative to contribute in a World Diabetes Day, 2015 campaign. The campaign focus on ‘Healthy Eating’ as a key factor in the fight against diabetes and a cornerstone of sustainable development.

Healthy eating can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and is an important part of the effective management of all types of diabetes. Here are some dietary Recommendations to reduce the risk for Type 2 diabetes

  • Drink water, unsweetened coffee or  tea
  • Avoid fruit juices, soda
  • Eat nuts, a piece of fresh fruit or unsweetened yogurt for a snack
  • Limit alcohol intake to a maximum of two drinks per day
  • Eat lean cuts of white meat, poultry or seafood
  • Use unsaturated fats (olive oil, canola oil, corn oil, or sunflower oil)
